Kennel cough has reared its ugly head again, but no need to panic! Just as human colds may be caused by many different viruses, kennel cough itself can have multiple causes. One of the most common culprits is a bacterium called Bordetella bronchiseptica m-- which is why kennel cough is often called Bordetella.

The vaccination for Kennel Cough only protects against some strains, so your dog can still contract the bacterium even if they have the vaccination.

The symptoms are coughing, hacking, sneezing, etc. Very similar to our symptoms when we catch a cold! If you are bringing you dog to the vet, please let them know ahead of time so they can limit exposure to other dogs. With rest and honey (to help soothe their throat), they should stop coughing in about a week. Keep your dog away from other dogs and places dogs frequent (pet stores, parks, trails, daycare, etc). After they have stopped coughing for one week, they can return to their normal routine!

Any dog that shows symptoms of kennel cough are sent home immediately to prevent spreading as much as possible.
