Kennel Cough
We have sent home dogs with symptoms in the past week and have been notified by owners. The vaccination for Kennel Cough only protects against some strains, so your dog can still contract the bacterium even if they have the vaccination.
The symptoms are coughing (can sometimes sound like a "honking"), hacking, sneezing, etc. Very similar to our symptoms when we catch a cold! If you are bringing your dog to the vet, please let them know ahead of time so they can limit exposure to other dogs. The Bordetella vaccine only protects against some strains, so your dog can still contract the bacterium even if they have the vaccination.
With rest and honey (to help soothe their throat), they should stop coughing in about a week. If symptoms persist or are worsening, please contact your vet. Keep your dog away from other dogs and places dogs frequent (pet stores, parks, trails, daycare, groomer, etc.). Once they are symptom free for 7 consecutive days, they can return to their regular routine!
